President's Corner

As we began our 77th Season, there were some squabbles at the theater. As the actors were 'squabbling' on stage, in the wonderfully successful production of Squabbles, the theater was filled with laughter and the also-present "aw" during the tender moments. Director Steve Lemenille and Producer Kay Macrae, the cast and a hard working production staff deserve a huge round of applause. We were pleased to deliver an encore production to make up for the snow-closing.

Currently in rehearsal is Rehearsal for Murder...a murder mystery you don't want to miss.

Speaking of which, If you're already a member, this might be a good time to take a membership for a family member or friend. You'll still have a savings of $10.00 for the remainder of the season. Remember, it's the gift that keeps on giving.

If you're looking for a way to introduce your children or grandchildren to live theater, mark your calendar for December 10th and make reservations for The Three Prince Charmings (see the article on the reverse side).

I had the pleasure of speaking before the Scotch Plains chapter of AARP representing WCP and discussing our theater and its workings. Many in the group knew of WCP and expressed their pleasure with our productions.

For the past few months we've been working hard on several improvements at the theater...the lighting booth stairs and addition, the bathrooms renovations and some landscaping improvements. We thank all those who helped.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, have a Happy, Safe and Enjoyable Holiday Season. We look forward to seeing you at the Playhouse in 2012.

JoAnne Lemenille
President

SPECIAL EDITION NEWSLETTER
Sept, 2011
Special Edition 2011 | ISSUE NUMBER 2
Dear Subscriber/Member/Patron:

We are looking foward to a tremendous season once again here at WCP. Our season line-up opens with the comedy, Squabbles, by Marshall Karp; followed by the murder-mystery, Rehearsal for Murder; then in celebration of Tenneesee Williams's 100 birtday, we will present The Glass Menagerie, and we close with the comedy, Don't Dress for Dinner by Marc Camoletti, author of Boeing-Boeing.
This summer has been quite productive at the theater...we have begun construction of our new access to our lighting and sound booth, we had the fortune of having two Eagle Scout candidates perform some special projects at the theater: revamping our dressing room, installing a fence in parking area, placing a new sign on the corner, and some landscape improvement. We hope you will take notice of these improvements.
We still have some additional improvements to make, and we hope these added improvements will continue to bring vitality to our theatre community.
Please take time to read this update about the goings-on at WCP. We have some additional programs to offer you beyond our regular season productions.
–JoAnne Lemenille
President

Directed by Steve Lemenille

Produced by Kay Macrae

This hilarious play pits a father in law against a mother in a comedic succession of squabbles. Jerry Sloan is a successful writer of advertising jingles married to an equally successful lawyer. Living with the happy couple is the not so happy Abe Dreyfus, Jerry's curmudgeon of a father in law. Abe is a funny guy to the audience, not to Jerry. The situation is exacerbated when Jerry's mother Mildred looses her house in a fire and needs a place to stay. Abe and Mildred can't stand each other. This play is one hilarious confrontation after another until the heart warming finale in which the oldsters discover that, really, each is not so bad.

The Cast

Lou Savarese (of Randolph) portrays Abe Dreyfus. This is Lou's second appearance here at WCP. He was previously seen as Marco in last season's production of A View from the Bridge. Welcome back, Lou.

Ana Soulios (of Martinsville) portrays Alice Sloan, Abe's daughter. Ana is making her WCP debut with this role. We welcome Ana to our theatrical family.

Tim McGovern (of Garwood) portrays Jerry Sloan, Alice's husband and Abe's son-in-law. Tim is a long-time member of our WCP family, most notably seen in last season's production of Smoke & Mirrors. Welcome again, Tim.

Debbie Badal (of Mendham) portrays Mildred Sloan, Jerry's mother and Alice's mother-in-law. Debbie is a veteran of WCP's stage having appeared in such shows as A Midsummer Night's Dream and Don't Drink the Water, and so many others.. Welcome home, Debbie.

Ken Webb (of Fanwood) portrays Hector Lopez, Jerry's Puerto Rican handyman who spends a great deal of time in the bathroom. Ken brings a special twist to this role. Ken made his acting debut last season in WCP's production of A View from the Bridge, and got the bug to act again. We're so glad he did. Ken will also be seen in our next production of Rehearsal for Murder. Welcome back, Ken.

Russ Ortiz (of Iselin) portrays Sol Wasserman, Abe's neighbor and friend. Russ is making his WCP debut with this production. Russ was nominated for a 2011 NJACT Perry Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play, And Then There Were None, produced at Main Street Theatre Company in Parlin. We are pleased to welcome him and Russ will be seen in our next production of Rehearsal for Murder.

Linda Correll (of Winfield) portrays Nurse Fisher, Alice and Jerry's baby-nurse. Linda has performed and directed here at WCP on numerous occasions. Most notable directorial's were A Lion in Winter and Staring Here, Starting Now. Linda was also seen in Caught in the Net. Linda will again be directing for WCP with our last show, Don't Dress for Dinner. Great having you back, Linda.

This is a thrilling "theatrical" mystery in which our theatre becomes the set for the play. The playwright turns on the stage work light and prepares for the first reading of his new play. The actors, producer, director and others connected with the show come onto the stage, and under their humorous (and utterly real) theatrical talk, tension grows. We discover that everyone connected with this play was involved with another play by the same playwright. At its opening night, exactly a year ago and in this same theatre, the beautiful leading lady, who was also the playwright's fiancee, was murdered! As these people start with he new play, startling connections to the murder begin to unfold. The growing tension reaches the boiling point with surprising revelations, countered by others even more surprising. The dazzling, yet basically logical twists build to a climax and solution that are theatrically stunning! The authors of this thriller have all had direct Broadway experience, and their dialogue has a special sting of wit and reality.

Amanda Wingfield is a faded, tragic remnant of Southern gentility who lives in poverty in a dingy St. Louis apartment with her son, Tom, and her daughter, Laura. Amanda strives to give meaning and direction to her life and the lives of her children, though her methods are ineffective and irritating. Tom is driven nearly to distraction by his mother's nagging and seeks escape in alcohol and the world of the movies. Laura also lives in her illusions. She is crippled, and this defect, intensified by her mother's anxiety to see her married, has driven her more and more into herself. The crux of the action comes when Tom invites a young man of his acquaintance to take dinner with the family. Jim, the caller, is a nice ordinary fellow who is at once pounced upon by Amanda as a possible husband for Laura. In spite of her crude and obvious efforts to entrap the young man, he and Laura manage to get along very nicely, and momentarily Laura is lifted out of herself into a new world. But this crashes when, toward the end, Jim explains that he is already engaged. The world of illusion that Amanda and Laura have striven to create in order to make life bearable collapses about them.

This boulevard comedy was a smash hit in Paris, where it played for over two years, and in London, where critical acclaim greeted the Apollo Theatre production. Bernard is planing a weekend with his chic Parisian mistress in a French farmhouse. He has arranged for a cordon bleu cook to prepare gourmet delights, is packing his wife Jacqueline off to her mother's, and has even invited his best friend to provide the alibi. It's foolproof; what could possibly go wrong? Suppose Robert turns up not knowing why he has been invited? Suppose Robert and Jacqueline are secret lovers? What happens if the cook is mistaken for the mistress and the mistress is unable to cook? An evening of hilarious confusion ensues as Bernard and Robert improvise at breakneck speed.
